bordered on all sides by libya chad nigeria benin republic mali burkina faso and algeria niger is the largest country in west africa although over 80 percent of its land area lies in the sahara desert the country's population stands at about 22 million and the capital and largest city is nyami nigeri republic is a multi-ethnic society with different groups which include the hausa which is the percent are christians and animists besides the mali and songhai empires which dominated part of modern day niger other kingdoms of influence in the region include the sultanate of ire and kanembornu empire at around 1449 the sultanate of ire was founded by sultan ilisawan in agazes in what is now northern niger the sultanates grew from a small trading post to a large and wealthy sultanate thanks to its strategic position on the trans-saharan trade routes it was however short-lived as it was conquered in 1515 by sungai and became part of the songhai empire until 1591 when sungai 2 collapsed the canon borno empire dominated the region around lake chad from the 700s to the 1700s founded in the 8th century and based in injimi near lake chad the kingdom began to expand notably during the at the nyami airport on the 9th of april 1999. the intrigues in nigeria's politics continued with a coup and a change of government three times before the seventh republic began in 2010 with mahamadu isufu elected as president nigeria has a moderate foreign policy and keeps friendly relations with the west the islamic world and non-aligned countries it is a member of the united nations serving in the u.n security council between 1980 and 1981 it also maintains good relations with its west african neighbors niger is made up of seven regions and one capital district these regions are further subdivided into 36 departments which are in turn broken into hundreds of communes of varying types her economy rests on subsistence crops livestock and uranium of which the country has some of the world's largest deposits drought cycles and desertification are some of the challenges that negatively impact the economy its gdp stood at 9.29 billion us dollars as at 2018. the guard wall and people from the four countries surrounding it including niger sadly the lake has shrunk by about 90 in size between 1963 to 1998. the city of agadez lying in the desert with its 1 000 year history is
